    "Storyteller seeks happy ending... "

Writing is inevitably a solitary occupation but I am not naturally a loner. And as I begin to wind down from the stress of living on my wits, I would like to meet someone who, like me, understands that doing things together brings more than double the pleasure than doing them alone. Whether it's walking Offa's Dyke, or catching a play by an unknown writer or one where you have to queue from dawn for tickets, or dashing to Amsterdam simply to see an exhibition (Caravaggio) that won't be coming to England, or dropping into a jazz session at a local pub, or hearing virtuoso musicians (Mahan Esfahani /Sheku Kenneh-Mason) in concert for the first time. Bring to that list your own passions and interests and hold on for a fun if not riveting ride! ..

    Occupation:
I started out as an actress (rather short-lived career), then did various jobs over the years a that followed -- secretary, gin PR, teacher and journalist amongst others. I am now successful author but could be more forthcoming in person.

    Education:
I went to an academic day school but dismayed my teachers when I opted to go to drama school rather than pursue any form of serious study.

    Heritage:
I come from a theatrical family, hence going on the stage.

    Religion:
Zero, beyond my conviction that religion of whatever kind is responsible for the majority of the world's current ills.

    Politics:
Left of centre. Brexiteers or Corbynites need not apply...

    Appearance:
Chameleon i.e. I scrub up well. I'm average height, average weight, average size, clearly fit and healthy. I'm told I have good cheek bones!

    Languages Spoken:
French, Italian, Having lived the last seventeen years in France, my French is pretty good. My Italian however, is only so-so; sufficient to get along, ask for directions, understand the replies, but not for philosophical or political conversations.

    Musical Instruments played:
I have recently bought a piano in the hope that I can take up where I left off half a century or so ago. Clearly an optimist!

    Music Enjoyed:
Classical, Jazz, Opera, My car radio is set to Radio 3. However, I also listen to Radio 2 between 3 and 5 on a Sunday when Johnny Walker does his sound-of-the-70s programme. I enjoy live gigs of whatever period or genre.

    Sports and exercise:
I don't 'do' any sport as such, except walking -- though I walk largely to enjoy being out and in the countryside rather than to exercise. That being said, I am happy to walk about 12 miles, assuming there's a pub and/or a picnic en route. As a spectator (or these days a listener) I am a keen follower of cricket.

    Interests and activities:
Art, Ballet, Cooking, Countryside, Eating Out, Gardening, Photography, Theatre, Walking, Writing, I enjoy long walks -- no matter what the weather. I am a good cook and a meal in the company of someone who enjoys food as much as I do, is one of life's underrated pleasures. I enjoy going to the theatre, opera, ballet when I get the chance.

    Animals and Pets:
Two cats, inherited rather than chosen, though they are good company for a writer.

    Newspapers and magazines:
Guardian, Independent, Wallpaper, On a long train journey -- or indeed any train journey -- I am more likely to read a book. I always have a book on hand ready for any eventuality where I might have to wait. Not having one on me is enough to precipitate a panic attack.

    Books:
Bruce Chatwin, Charles Dickens, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ian Rankin, John Le Carre, Julian Barnes, Muriel Spark, Sebastian Faulks, Ted Hughes, I would be unlikely to take any of the above, unless they were brand new offerings. I would be more likely to catch up on contemporary novels whose authors were new to me, or non fiction relating to people on the periphery of history.

    Favourite Films:
Casablanca, Cinema Paradiso, Citizen Kane, Les Enfants du Paradis, Maltese Falcon, Manhattan, Some Like It Hot, As I've spent the last 17 years living in France, I have an entire chest full of classics, from all of the above, to contemporary French to Czech new wave from the sixties, as well as Box Sets such as The Wire and the West Wing.

    Enjoyable evening out:
Art Gallery, Cinema, Restaurant, Pub, Theatre, What I chose would depend on the other person's interests as I would happily go to any of the above. I'd even go to greyhound racing! I'm a great believer in new experiences.

    Favourite Dishes:
Handmade Pizza, Lemongrass and ginger marinated chicken, Lobster Thermidor, I usually opt for something I don't cook at home, whether that's pizza, fish'n'chips, Asian food of some description, or amazingly complicated European food at absurd prices.

    Ideal Holiday:
Backpacking in the Himalayas, Driving slowly around Ireland, I have travelled a good deal during my life, thanks largely to my work, so a holiday for me is more likely to mean exploring somewhere closer to home. The idea of sitting on a beach in a gated enclave fills me with dread. Give me local food, a hire car or walking shoes and rucksack, and I'm happy.

    In another life:
a tree, a doctor, a musician, Obviously to have been a doctor and to have achieved something tangible would have been wonderful. But I also regret having given up the piano. Being able to sit down and play (and sing) a Cole Porter song, say, would give me (and others I hope) enormous pleasure. And, in moments of sadness to be able sit down and play would be a huge comfort.

    Personality:
Adventurous, Caring, Cheerful, Confident, Courageous, Creative, Gregarious, Humorous, Imaginative, Independent, Positive, Reliable, Romantic, Sensual, Strong, Stylish, Of course, I have no real idea how my friends would describe me. Some might see me as intellectual (more so than they are) and some might see me as eccentric and wild (more so than they are).
